History

Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM), located in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, was established following Cabinet approval on November 23, 1982. The hospital began admitting patients on March 14, 1983, and was officially inaugurated on August 26, 1984, by the Sultan of Kelantan. Initially, HUSM operated with a modest 36-bed capacity but has since expanded to a 747-bed facility, providing comprehensive medical services and serving as a premier teaching hospital and medical research center in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The School of Medical Sciences at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was established in June 1979. In its early development, the pre-clinical years were conducted in Penang, while clinical training was facilitated through various hospitals. The establishment of HUSM in 1983 provided a dedicated facility for clinical training, enhancing the quality of medical education and research at USM.

Pioneered by then Head of Department, Dr Mohd Shukri bin Othman, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at HUSM has played a pivotal role in advancing women’s health in the region and have championed in providing O&G services to the public - offering a range of services, including prenatal care, childbirth, and gynecological surgeries, contributing significantly to maternal and child health in Malaysia.

In recognition of its excellence in education and research, Universiti Sains Malaysia was designated as an Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX) university on September 3, 2008. This status has further enhanced HUSM’s role in national and international medical research and publications, solidifying its reputation as a leading institution in the healthcare sector.
